The Oakland Athletics will be without relief pitcher Fernando Rodriguez for the entire 2013 season after the right-hander underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Thursday.
The 28-year-old, who was acquired from Houston along with shortstop Jed Lowrie last month, had been expected to be part of a solid Oakland relief corps.
During his time with the Astros over the last two seasons, Rodriguez posted a 4.77 earned run average and struck out 135 batters in 122 2/3 innings over 118 appearances. He went 2-10 with a 5.37 ERA over 71 games in 2012.
