Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney II says the club will start working on a new deal with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger at some point but isn't sure whether it will be this spring or next.
Roethlisberger has two years remaining on his current contract, a time when the franchise typically tries to lock-up its quarterback with a new long-term deal. Rooney remains confident Roethlisberger will remain in Pittsburgh, saying it's a priority that Roethlisberger "retire as a Steeler."
Rooney says the team has already told the NFL it will appeal any further sanctions from coach Mike Tomlin's ill-advised step onto the field on Thanksgiving night against Baltimore. The league says it is considering docking the team a draft pick. Rooney said Tomlin, who was fined $100,000, has already paid the price.
