Angels outfielder Vernon Wells underwent surgery Tuesday to have a torn medial collateral ligament in his right thumb repaired.
The Angels said Wells will be sidelined for 8-10 weeks after the 30-minute procedure performed by hand and wrist specialist Dr. Steve Shin. A rehab program has not yet been scheduled.
Wells was hurt last Sunday while attempting to steal second base in the second inning of a 3-2 loss to the San Diego Padres.
In 38 games this season, his second with the Angels, Wells is hitting .244 with six home runs and 12 runs batted in.
