The San Francisco 49ers continue to be very active less than 24 hours from the official start of free agency. Hours after they reportedly agreed to deals with quarterback Brian Hoyer and wideout Marquise Goodwin, the Niners opted to address their defense and are expected to sign former Super Bowl MVP linebacker Malcolm Smith, FOX Sports NFL Insider Peter Schrager reported Wednesday.

Smith, who played the past two years with the Raiders after signing a two-year, $7 million deal, finished with 86 tackles and one interception in 2016. The 27-year-old broke into the league with the Seahawks, spending his first four years in Seattle and taking home Super Bowl MVP honors in 2013.

The 49ers, who are coming off a 2-14 season, underwent an overhaul in the front office, hiring former NFL safety John Lynch as general manager. San Francisco allowed a league-worst 406.4 yards and 30 points per game in 2016, leaving many holes for the franchise to fill.
