Alex Reyes to have Tommy John surgery, out for season

Those fearing the worst for Alex Reyes were right. He's out for the season.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak announced Wednesday morning that Reyes, the organization's top prospect and the game's top right-handed pitching prospect, will have Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. The hope is that he will be ready to go next spring.

Reyes complained to the team's medical staff of right elbow soreness last week. He was sent for an MRI on Tuesday, revealing the tear that will require surgery.

The Cardinals had been hoping Reyes would earn a spot in the team's rotation or bullpen, if not immediately, then at some point this season.
