Former Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Tuesday afternoon. Gardenhire, who was hired as a bench coach by the Arizona Diamondbacks this season, will have surgery to remove the prostate at a date to be named later.
"I'm going to fight it and deal with it," said Gardenhire in a press release. "It's a bump in the road and it's not how I envisioned starting spring training with a brand new team, but it's part of life. With the backing of this ball club, we'll get through it and I'll get through it."
The bench coach position with Arizona is the first full-time job in baseball for Gardenhire since he was released by the Twins in September 2014.
He managed the Twins for 13 seasons from 2002-14 and posted a 1068-1039 career record with the team. Gardenhire coached Minnesota to six division championships and was named the 2010 AL Manager of the Year.
The Twins sent out a tweet this afternoon to wish thoughts and prayers for Gardenhire, who tallied the second-most wins as a manager in franchise history.
