Coroner confirms Rashaan Salaam's death was a suicide

DENVER (AP) An autopsy has confirmed that Heisman Trophy winner Rashaan Salaam killed himself.

Salaam was found dead Dec. 5 in a park near the University of Colorado, where he played as a running back from 1992 to 1994. He was 42.

Boulder County Coroner's Office said Thursday that an autopsy determined he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators say they weren't able to determine whether Salaam suffered chronic head trauma from playing football, because his family didn't consent to those tests. Salaam was Muslim and Islam prohibits bodies from being defiled after death.

An autopsy report says he had a history of depression and recent life stressors.

Salaam won the Heisman in 1994 after leading the Buffaloes to a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.
