Apparently, it hasn't taken Arian Foster very long to make a strong impression at Miami Dolphins camp.
The former Houston Texans All-Pro running back, who is entering his first season with the Dolphins, may have a chip on his shoulder as he looks to prove that he still has some gas left in the tank. So far, so good.
According to Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, Foster showed up to camp in great shape and "annihilated his conditioning test." Gase plans to use Foster as a receiving back and said that his routes have looked "smooth" and "effortless," which is high praise for a veteran running back who played in just four games before suffering a torn achilles last season.
Foster will turn 30 later this month and signed with the Dolphins on a one-year deal with the expectation that he would be the backup in Miami, behind projected starter Jay Ajayi. But, at this point, it sounds like there's a strong possibility that Foster could capture the starting job.
According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, Foster has been the best back in camp so far...and it apparently hasn't been that close.
Gase also seemed to echo that praise, saying that Foster would be working with the starting unit for the entirety of training camp.
"His resume speaks for itself. I don't think there's any question why we brought him in here," said Gase. "He's playing this year. Whether he's the guy that will be the first snap of the game, time will tell. He is going to be rolling with the ones."
A four-time Pro Bowler, this will be Foster's first season away from Houston after signing with the Texans as an undrafted rookie free agent back in 2009. If the running back can return to (or even close to) the form he showed during the prime of his career, the Dolphins may have hit the jackpot.
