Minnesota Wild owner Craig Leipold will open a restaurant named after "Miracle on Ice" hockey coach and St. Paul native Herb Brooks, he announced Wednesday.
Leipold plans on opening the 200-seat restaurant, called Herbie's On The Park, in time for the upcoming Wild season. The restaurant will be in the Minnesota Club at 317 Washington St. in St. Paul, the same building in which the Minnesota Wild offices are headquartered.
A release said the restaurant will be open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. It said guests can expect an "upscale tavern that will serve as a lively gathering place" where they can "celebrate great sips, tastes and neighborly hospitality."
"The historic Minnesota Club is the perfect setting for Herbie's and I'm thrilled to be able to showcase this beautiful landmark to our fans and guests," Leipold said in a release. "This is a space that should be enjoyed by many and I'm delighted to be able to make that a reality with this new neighborhood destination."
The late Brooks coached the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, leading them to an upset over the Soviet Union team often referred to as the "Miracle on Ice" en route to winning the gold medal. He also led the Minnesota Gophers to three NCAA titles.
His brother, David Brooks, is the owner and landlord of the Minnesota Club building. Leipold will own the restaurant and Levy Restaurants will operate and manage it.
Leipold plans on unveiling the restaurant's menu, hours, reservations and website in the coming weeks.
