Yasiel Puig hasn't exactly put on a base-running clinic this week, and he paid the price for a mental mistake on Tuesday by spending the rest of the game on the bench.

In the sixth inning of an 8-2 win over the Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers' right fielder watched a long drive to right bounce off the outfield wall instead of clearing it. What he thought was a homer should have been a double but actually became a single. And even though he came around to score in the inning, Puig promptly was pulled from the game by manager Dave Roberts.

"In my opinion, he should have been on second base," Roberts told the Dodgers' website. "When we talk about playing the game the right way, we've got to be accountable. So that was the decision that I made."

To his credit, Puig owned the mistake when speaking to reporters afterward.

"It was a bad decision on my part," Puig via a translator, according to the Los Angeles Times. "It was a good decision on the manager's part. It shows not only myself, but the rest of my teammates, that you have to run out every single ball."

He added: "I wanted to keep playing. But his decision was the correct one, because I wasn't giving 100 percent."

This latest gaffe came just two days Puig failed to advance to third base on a bunt in the ninth inning of a tie game, which the Dodgers eventually won in 17 innings on Sunday.
