The Raiders signing Aldon Smith to a two-year deal caught some off guard. The talented but troubled linebacker is not eligible to play at least until November after being suspended by the league for violating the substance abuse policy.
But it looks like the Raiders didn't take a big risk bringing back Smith, who had 3 1/2 sacks in nine games before the suspension. According to Pro Football Talk, Smith's deal doesn't include a signing bonus or guaranteed money. The deal reportedly will pay him $1.25 million each year.
The contract does include a $250,000 bonus for each game Smith is on the 53-man roster in the regular season and a $500,000 workout bonus each year. But considering the amount of time Smith will miss due to the suspension, he will miss out on the $500,000 bonus for this year and a bulk of the $250,000 game bonuses.
Smith was released by the 49ers last August after numerous off-field incidents that culminated with his fifth arrest since joining the club in 2011.
