DORAL, Fla. – No one has been better at Doral over the last five years than Bubba Watson.
And he has no wins on the Blue Monster to show for that record.
Watson was second in 2012, second again in 2014 — going on to win the Masters in each of those years, incidentally — and was third at Doral last year. Another second-place got added to the resume Sunday, his final round of 4-under 68 leaving him at 11 under for the week and one shot behind Cadillac Championship winner Adam Scott.
"It was a good day," Watson said.
It could have been better, of course, and took an odd turn on the 18th tee.
Watson was ready for his tee shot, then backed off for reasons that weren't clear — and that he wasn't willing to shed light upon after the round, either.
"I'm going to go with this: I'm just a head case and I had to back off to get refocused," Watson said. "I'm going to get blasted if I say what the true answer is, so I'm just going to say I had to back off because I'm just a head case and I tried to get the cobwebs out of my head."
He made par on 18, signed some autographs while waiting to see if he was headed to a playoff, then warmly congratulated Scott when the outcome was decided.

JOHNSON'S TROUBLES: Dustin Johnson headed to the back nine on Sunday squarely in the hunt for what would have been a second straight Cadillac Championship victory.
And then he went on an absolute freefall.
Giving back seven shots in four holes — double-bogey, double-bogey, bogey and then another double — Johnson plummeted out of contention in a final-round collapse. He shot 7-over 79 on Sunday, finishing 10 shots behind winner Adam Scott.

SPIETH'S WEEK: Jordan Spieth said winning the Valspar Championship in Tampa last year was the spark that got his huge 2015 really rolling.
He's probably hoping for a repeat performance.
Spieth never got on track at Doral this week, finishing the week 1 under and tied for 17th place. He shot 73-73 on the weekend, but will try to defend in Tampa this coming week.

EVENTFUL KIM: K.T. Kim's week was eventful, to say the least.
Kim had 11 straight scores of anything other than par to open his third round, and his final round Sunday wasn't lacking for theatrics. After making a quintuple-bogey 10 on the par-5 10th hole, Kim got a couple of those shots back on the 12th hole by holing out for eagle from a fairway bunker.
Kim finished the week 6 over, tied for 42nd place.

BIG NUMBERS: Kristoffer Broberg finished next-to-last among the 65 finishers, with plenty of room to spare. His four-day score of 311 beat last-place finisher Steven Bowditch by a whopping 14 shots.
Bowditch's 325 was the worst 72-hole score recorded in a World Golf Championships event, and the worst at Doral in a PGA Tour event since its debut year in 1962.
