BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) Jake Spavital has been hired by California as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach a month after he left Texas A&M by mutual agreement.

The announcement was made by Bears coach Sonny Dykes in a news release Thursday.

Spavital (SPAH-vih-tall) spent the past three seasons at Texas A&M. He was offensive coordinator/QBs coach the last two years.

Among the coaches the 30-year-old Spavital has worked for are Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M, Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia and Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State.

He's coached several topnotch quarterbacks as well, including Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel at A&M, Case Keenum at Houston and Geno Smith at West Virginia.

He replaces Tony Franklin, who left last month to take a similar post at Middle Tennessee State.
