Indianapolis Colts linebacker Nate Irving will miss the remainder of the season with a wrist injury suffered in Sunday's blowout loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

On Tuesday, the Colts placed Irving on season-ending injured reserve further depleting the team's linebacking core. The five-year veteran started the 45-10 loss to the Steelers in place of middle linebacker Jerrell Freeman, who missed the game with a hamstring injury. Per the Indianapolis Star, Freeman is expected to sit out this Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars as well.

The 27-year-old Irving appeared in eight games this season with two starts. He signed with the Colts as a free agent in March after spending four years with the Denver Broncos and made 14 tackles and with one sack this season.

Indianapolis promoted linebacker Amarlo Herrera to the active roster to take Irving's place. Herrera was the Colts' 2015 sixth-round draft choice.

The Colts also re-signed cornerback Jalil Brown, who started three games earlier in the year, and waived corner Josh Thomas.

Linebacker Edwin Jackson was signed as well to take Herrera's spot on the team's practice squad.
