NEW YORK (AP) Melo Trimble scored a season-high 25 points and freshman Diamond Stone had 16 as No. 6 Maryland took a 20-point lead in the first half and went on to beat Connecticut 76-66 on Tuesday night in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
The Terrapins (8-1) used their size up front to dominate the rebounding 45-24, including 23-9 on the offensive end. Robert Carter had 11 rebounds and Stone grabbed nine.
Daniel Hamilton had a season-high 23 points for the Huskies (5-3), who have lost three of four.

Maryland took its biggest lead of the game at 34-14 on a 3-pointer by Jared Nickens with 4:54 left in the first half. The Terrapins led 38-22 at halftime, outrebounding the Huskies 25-12.
NO. 10 VIRGINIA 70, NO. 14 WEST VIRGINIA 54
NEW YORK (AP) - Anthony Gill had season highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds in Virginia's win in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
In the first game between the schools in 30 years, the Cavaliers (8-1) had trouble all game with West Virginia's pressure and switching defenses. They trailed by as many as 12 points late in the first half.
When the second half started, the Cavaliers didn't stop committing turnovers, but they hardly missed a shot in taking a 13-point lead with 3:57 to play.
Virginia shot 73.7 percent (14 of 19) in the second half and 62.8 percent (27 for 43) for the game. Gill finished 9 of 11 from the field while Perrantes was 5 of 6.
Jaysean Paige had 16 points for West Virginia (7-1), which went cold from the field in the second half, missing everything from 3-point attempts to layups.
NO. 12 XAVIER 90, WRIGHT STATE 55
CINCINNATI (AP) - Trevon Bluiett scored a career-high 22 points, and Xavier went on a 25-point run during a runaway victory that moved the Musketeers to 9-0 for the first time in seven years.
Bluiett also had 11 rebounds in his second straight double-double and his third of the season. Xavier pulled ahead by 42 points before resting its starters down the stretch.
The Raiders (3-6) couldn't keep up in their first game against Xavier since the 1994-95 season. Xavier led by as many as 29 points in the first half.
Wright State fell to 6-19 all-time against ranked teams, its last such win coming over Butler on Dec. 8, 2007. The Raiders have dropped their last nine against Top 25 teams.
NO. 16 BAYLOR 75, NORTHWESTERN STATE 62
WACO, Texas (AP) - Rico Gathers scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, helping Baylor pull away for the win.
Gathers was 12 of 20 from the field in his fourth consecutive double-double and had a season high in rebounds, although it was well short of his career high of 28 against Huston-Tillotson last January. He had more rebounds than the Demons, who were beaten on the glass 47-18.
Taurean Prince, who scored 30 in a win over No. 21 Vanderbilt on Sunday, had 11 points and 13 rebounds in the 31st straight non-conference home win for the Bears (7-1).
Zeek Woodley scored 21 points for Northwestern State (1-7).
NO. 17 MIAMI 66, FLORIDA 55
CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Sheldon McClellan scored 24 points, and Miami overcame an off night offensively with scrappy defense.
The Hurricanes held Florida to 39 percent shooting, including 1 for 12 from 3-point range. Miami shot a season-low 39 percent overall, but made 7 of 17 3-pointers and shot 79 percent from the free-throw line.
The Hurricanes (8-1) won their third straight game since losing at home to Northeastern. The Gators (6-2) lost to their instate rivals for the second consecutive year.
Tonye Jekiri, Miami's leading rebounder this season, went to the locker room after being shaken up when he fell under the basket. He missed eight minutes before returning early in the second half, and finished with nine points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
John Egbunu scored 14 for the Gators, who had two players foul out and never found their shooting touch.
NO. 19 SMU 82, MICHIGAN 58
DALLAS (AP) - Jordan Tolbert got most of his 23 points on rim-rattling slam dunks and had nine rebounds as SMU stayed undefeated.
Nic Moore had 15 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers before assisting on consecutive dunks by Tolbert during a 13-2 run late in the first half that put the Mustangs (7-0) in total control. Tolbert had nine dunks and finished 11-of-12 shooting.
Keith Frazier also had 15 points for SMU, off to its best start since winning its first 10 games in 1997-98.
Duncan Robinson and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman each scored 15 points for Michigan (6-3), which had won four in a row.
NO. 20 GONZAGA 61, MONTANA 58
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis each scored 16 points, and Gonzaga held on for the win.
Wiltjer made two free throws with 7.5 seconds left. A 3-point attempt by Montana's Brandon Gfeller bounced off the front rim as time expired.
Sabonis had 10 rebounds and Wiltjer nine for the Bulldogs (6-2). Josh Perkins scored 13 points and Eric McClellan had 11.
Martin Breunig led Montana (3-4) with 20 points, 18 coming after halftime. Walter Wright added 14 points.
