Cardinals promote S Swearinger, place OL Watford on injured reserve

The Arizona Cardinals made a move to bolster the depth in their secondary, signing safety D.J. Swearinger from the practice squad on Tuesday.

Cardinals safeties Tony Jefferson (hamstring) and Rashad Johnson (ankle) were each limited in practice Tuesday while starting cornerback Jerraud Powers (calf) remained sidelined and will likely miss his second straight game when the Cardinals host the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night.

In a corresponding roster move, Arizona placed offensive lineman Earl Watford on injured reserve due to a hand injury. In his third year out of James Madison, Watford started the first two games this season but hasn't played much since and was inactive for Sunday's game at St. Louis.

Swearinger, a second-round draft pick of the Houston Texans in 2013, was signed to the practice squad on Dec. 1 after he was waived by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He started 22 of 32 games for the Texans over two seasons, recording four interceptions.

Meanwhile, backup running back Andre Ellington (turf toe) also did not practice Tuesday along with defensive lineman Frostee Rucker (ankle) and tight end Jermaine Gresham (knee).
