The San Diego Padres are reportedly interested in filling their need for a shortstop with one of the best defensive shortstops in the game.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres have inquired about Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons.

The 26-year-old Curaçaoan infielder has won two Gold Gloves and one Platinum Glove in four seasons, and can hold his weight at the plate as well despite a lack of power.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Padres aren't the only team interested in Simmons, adding that it doesn't appear as though a deal is imminent.

San Diego struggled to find stability at shortstop last season, platooning Alexi Amarista and Clint Barmes, and inserting Will Middlebrooks and Jedd Gyorko at the position as well.
