Joe Gibbs Racing drivers, teams won't be penalized after issues in Texas inspection

The Joe Gibbs Racing teams of Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Denny Hamlin won't face penalties after having their cars' splitters confiscated for being too thick during pre-race inspection for Sunday's AAA Texas 500 at Texas Motor Speedway.

A NASCAR spokesman confirmed to FOXSports.com Tuesday evening that "there will not be any further issues on the splitters," which means the three JGR drivers and their respective teams are in no danger of losing points ahead of this weekend's elimination race at Phoenix International Raceway.

While Hamlin was eliminated from the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in the Contender Round, Busch and Edwards remain in contention to be among the four finalists for the winner-take-all Championship Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Nov. 22.

Busch is second in the standings, two points behind leader Jeff Gordon and 11 ahead of fifth-place Edwards, who is currently the first driver on the wrong side of the cutoff for the Championship 4.

Edwards is seven points behind Martin Truex Jr., the driver clinging to the final transfer spot for the Championship 4.

Tuesday's revelation of no penalties should have come as no surprise to the JGR organization.

On Sunday, both Busch and team owner Joe Gibbs expressed confidence that no penalties would be forthcoming for any of the three JGR cars in question.

"I don't foresee there being any penalties from NASCAR on that," Busch said after the race. "But anything's possible. I could be wrong. I have no idea what the infraction was or what they were upset about. But we changed it and apparently met their expectations after we changed it and were able to go out there and race today."

Gibbs concurred.

"We went through all the other inspections and everything before qualifying, but I think there was something there that we wanted changed and we changed it," the three-time Sprint Cup champion team owner said. "I don't think that's going to be a points penalty."
