The Toronto Blue Jays finally ended their postseason drought, but it appears the general manager who got them there won't stick around for an encore.
Alex Anthopoulos, the Jays' GM since the end of the 2009 season, is leaving the team despite an offer to stay on, sources confirmed to FOX Sports 1 baseball insiders Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi.
The news was first reported by Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
News of the split comes as a surprise so soon after the Blue Jays were eliminated by the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS.
According to the reports, financial terms weren't thought to be the divisive issue.
The impending arrival of president/CEO Mark Shapiro, the former Cleveland Indians president hired in August, could have something to do with Anthopoulos' decision.
Competing in the rugged AL East, the Blue Jays failed to reach the postseason in the first several years under Anthopoulos but won the division easily this season with a 93-69 record. They managed to make it to the ALCS but fell in six games. It was the franchise's first postseason since 1993.
The Bue Jays were 489-483 all told on Anthopoulos' watch.
We'll have more details on this developing story soon.
