The Seattle Seahawks blamed "communication" issues for a blown defensive coverage in the secondary that led to the winning touchdown in Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Carolina Panthers.
And because it was the fourth time the Seahawks have lost after holding a fourth-quarter lead, coach Pete Carroll said on his weekly radio show that the missed assignment was not the result of a bigger problem on the team.
"The communication was fine the whole day and on the last touchdown play the call didn't get to everybody the way it always does," Carroll said. "There was some kind of a glitch in there that happened."
Cornerback Richard Sherman was the only player in the correct coverage among the Legion of Boom while the remainder of the secondary was lined up in another defensive alignment, allowing Panthers tight end Greg Olsen to roam free toward the end zone for the winning touchdown reception.
"It just was confusion about what call we were in. There were a couple calls being signaled in that were different," Sherman told reporters after the game. "And the game's at a fast pace, so you have to make a decision."
Carroll noted that he was perplexed by the confusion, saying the call was relayed to the players in plenty of time and some "just missed it." Despite sitting at 2-4, Carroll expects his team to make a run for a postseason berth.
"We should be 6-0 and we should be rolling right now," Carroll said. "This season is not done at all. It's just been very, very challenging."
