If San Francisco 49ers first-year coach Jim Tomsula is seeking some consolation from his team's last two drubbings, he can look back and see how one of the franchise's legendary coaches had it worse.
The 49ers have been shredded for 90 points and been outscored by 65 points in consecutive losses to the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers, marking the first time they allowed at least 43 points in back-to-back games since 1980.
The coach at the time was Hall of Famer Bill Walsh, who was in his second season with San Francisco and would turn around the fortunes of the club, leading the 49ers to three Super Bowl championships.
Walsh, though, also presided over the worst two-game stretch in franchise annals. San Francisco was overwhelmed by the Los Angeles Rams 48-26 before being bludgeoned by the Dallas Cowboys 59-14 - the largest margin of defeat in club history.
That's a 67-point differential, barely edging this edition of the 49ers. "That's what bugs you the most," Tomsula said in reference to the lopsided nature of the losses.
