Another New York Mets starter might soon miss his turn in the pitching rotation. Only, this one won't incite a disastrous media firestorm.
According to the New York Post, the Mets are debating the possibility of skipping ace right-hander Jacob deGrom in the rotation in the final weeks of the season.
The reigning NL Rookie of the Year has thrown 176 innings this season, a figure that doesn't particularly concern the Mets brass, according to the report, but they are still favoring giving the hurler some rest as the regular season winds down.
"If we could do it I think it would be a preference," general manager Sandy Alderson of skipping one of deGrom's starts. "Just general, giving him a break, I think it would be a good idea -- as it would be for most."
DeGrom has had a sensational sophomore season with the Mets this year, and has essentially usurped Matt Harvey as the team's ace.
In 27 starts this season, the 27-year-old righty has gone 13-7 with a 2.40 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 184 strikeouts against 36 walks in 176 innings.
As the Mets make their decision on resting deGrom, he is currently slated to make his next start this coming Tuesday in Miami.
Assuming the Mets stick to their current rotation, deGrom will make two additional regular-season starts following his outing against the Marlins next week.

UDPATE: ESPN.com reports that manager Terry Collins has said deGrom won't be skipped in the rotation this month.
