One veteran for the New York Jets whose roster spot is less than clear is wide receiver Jeremy Kerley. All throughout training camp and the preseason, Kerley has seen his role disintegrate as he's surrendered reps to both Chris Owusu and Quincy Enunwa this offseason.
Kerley hasn't seen time on the field in the past two preseason games as he's been recovering from a concussion, but he likely wouldn't have played in the finale regardless.
After the game on Thursday night, head coach Todd Bowles offered some insight on Kerley's roster spot prior to final cuts being made in the next two days.
"We'll have those decisions [Friday], and we'll make those decisions [Thursday night after the preseason finale]," Bowles said via Darryl Slater of NJ.com. "We've got a bunch of good receivers, so we're going to take a look at them."
Kerley isn't likely to be cut, given his contract and proven ability as a slot receiver. If the Jets were to cut him, he'd count $4.4 million against the cap when compared to his $2.6 million if he's on the 53-man roster.
He's had success as a slot receiver in the past for the Jets, and there's no reason why he can't continue to do so this season. The only difference is that the Jets wide receiver group is significantly more crowded this season with Enunwa and rookie Devin Smith likely to make the roster.
