MUNICH --

Bayern Munich says Brazil defender Dante is leaving the club to join Bundesliga rival Wolfsburg.

The Bundesliga champion says it has reached agreement with Wolfsburg on the transfer, pending a medical, after which Dante will sign a three-year contract. Financial details of the deal were not released.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says Dante had asked to be released after losing his place in the starting lineup. Dante made a short farewell appearance for Bayern as a substitute in Saturday's 3-0 win over Leverkusen.

Dante joins another former Bayern player and Brazil teammate in Wolfsburg, Luiz Gustavo.

Wolfsburg finished second to Bayern in the Bundesliga and is seen as its main challenger this season as well. Wolfsburg also won the German Cup.
