Conor McGregor on Sinead O'Connor at UFC 189: 'The show must be a spectacle'

From the moment Conor McGregor walked out in Dublin last July, he knew that his fights were going to be as much about spectacle as they were about sport.

McGregor has turned into a national celebrity in his home country with just about every Irish superstar supporting him in one way or another.

U2 has posted Team McGregor photos on their Instagram page and Irish born actor Colin Farrell has stated that the UFC interim featherweight champion is "an amazing representative of all the best things" from Ireland.

So after he dusted off Diego Brandao at the event on the Emerald Isle last year, McGregor went into the backstage area and immediately told UFC president Dana White and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta that he had an idea to make his future fights even bigger.

"After UFC Dublin I went backstage to Dana (White) and Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I said 'this is the way we need to do it, things need to be different here'. The show must be a spectacle," McGregor told FOX Sports in an exclusive interview in Las Vegas.

McGregor got his wish at UFC 189 when Irish singer Sinead O'Connor serenaded him to the Octagon to the track "The Foggy Dew", which he had used for his walkout song ever since arriving in the promotion.

The performance helped turn UFC 189 into one of the most talked about events of the year, and McGregor capped it all off by winning the interim featherweight title when he knocked out Chad Mendes in the second round.

"That has never happened before in the history of the sport. Never had people sing people to the Octagon," McGregor said.

"(Sinead)'s a powerful woman, she has a powerful voice. When you listen to her music it's eerily beautiful. It's go to war music."
