It's starting to become a trend for Washington Redskins rookie running back Matt Jones to pull off an explosive run every time he steps into live game action. After an impressive preseason debut last week, Jones followed it up with another strong performance in Thursday's preseason game against the Detroit Lions.
Jones finished with 44 yards rushing and a touchdown on eight carries. He is now up to 82 yards rushing on just 13 preseason carries. Jones even mixed in with the first team offense on a few snaps.
In his preseason debut, Jones finished with five carries for 38 yards. On his first carry of the preseason, he showed off his burst by exploding forward for 23 yards. His burst and quick first step have been evident since the start of the preseason.

Jones finished with 15 total snaps, but the Redskins didn't use him to pass block on a single play. Pass protection will be key for Jones if he wants to earn a role in his rookie season beyond an occasional spell for Alfred Morris.
If he can show improvement as a pass blocker and receiver, he could make a move up the depth chart and give Thompson a run for the third-down back role.
