The New York Giants are desperate to find safety help after losing safeties Landon Collins and Mykkele Thompson to injuries during the preseason opener. On Sunday, they agreed to terms with free agent safety Brandon Meriweather.
Meriweather was last with the Washington Redskins during the 2012-2014 seasons. After making the Pro Bowl twice earlier in his career with the Patriots, Meriweather struggled to show more than a replacement-level safety with the Redskins. In 2014, he finished as the 60th-best safety out of 87 qualifying safeties, according to Pro Football Focus.
Meriweather believes that his new team and a fresh start will help him get back to his Pro Bowl ways in 2015.
"I'm excited, man," Meriweather said to reporters, per Michael Eisen of Giants.com. "Anytime you can come to a great organization, you've always got to be excited and ready to help.
"I'm going to go in and I'm going to put my all into it. I'm going to get with coach every day until I get it the way I knew every other defense."
Reporters asked Meriweather if he is the same player now as he was when he went to those two Pro Bowls with the Patriots. Meriweather said, "I know I am."
The Giants will mix in Meriweather at strong safety, and due to their injury situation at the position, he has a strong chance of seeing first team snaps as soon as this practice week. Keep an eye on what unit he lines up with when the Giants take on the Jaguars in their home preseason opener this Saturday night.
