The Philadelphia Phillies could promote one of the pitchers acquired in the Cole Hamels deals following a historically poor outing by right-hander David Buchanan in Tuesday's 13-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Buchanan became the first Phillies pitcher since Hal Kelleher to allow 11 runs in one inning since May 5, 1938. He also surrendered the most runs overall by a Philadelphia starter since Al Jurisch in 1947.
Kelleher never pitched in the majors again after that performance, and Buchanan could be ticketed for a demotion after dropping to 2-7 with a 9.00 ERA. He has been battered for 18 runs and 21 hits in 5 2/3 innings over his last two starts and given up five hits in as many at-bats to the opposing pitchers.
"We're probably going to discuss it," Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin said of adding a fresh arm after his team was ravaged for 26 runs in the past two games. "We'll figure something out."
Two of the pitchers acquired in the blockbuster deal that sent Hamels to the Texas Rangers at the trade deadline are faring well for the Phillies' Triple-A affililiate at Lehigh Valley.
Jerad Eickhoff has won both his starts, allowing one run and striking out 11 in 14 innings, while fellow right-hander Alec Asher is 1-0 with a 2.77 ERA in his two starts.
