San Diego's tense battle with its football team finally has an expiration date.
According to the Orange County Register, the team was presented with a "drop-dead" date to decide to stay in town or relocate elsewhere. That date is Sept. 11.
City officials revealed the deadline to NFL senior vice president Eric Grubman and Chargers officials at a Wednesday meeting. Grubman told the Register that no additional negotiations took place, but "plenty of questions were asked."
One of those questions might've been about the arbitrary date itself. But an early-September line in the sand is expected to give the city enough time to prepare in case the Chargers decide to stay.
A special election would be needed to confirm the Chargers in San Diego. San Diegans would need to approve a new $1.1 billion stadium at the team's current site in Mission Valley.
"The game isn't over," mayor Kevin Faulconer said about the negotating process. "We're entering the fourth quarter and time remains to negotiate a fair and responsible agreement."
