The Chicago Cubs would love to reunite Detroit Tigers ace David Price with his former Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon.
Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein reportedly was one of the first to contact the Tigers about Price's availability. Detroit, scuffling to a disappointing season, could put Price on the trade block before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
CBS Chicago's Bruce Levin reported Chicago's quick trigger to contact the Tigers. The choice Chicago has to make is how much it is willing to give up in terms of its hot prospects in a trade now when it can wait until the offseason and potentially sign him as a free agent. The Cubs, reportedly, are the frontrunner to land Price in free agency.
Price, 9-3 with a 2.32 ERA, played his entire career for Maddon with the Rays before being traded last year. He has plenty of postseason experience and could fortify the Cubs' rotation down the stretch as they try to solidify a wildcard spot, and even track down the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals.
