Ottawa, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk was discharged earlier this week from a Toronto hospital after undergoing a liver transplant, the team announced Wednesday.
Dr. Atul Humar, the medical director of the University Health Network's Multi- Organ Transplant Program, said Melnyk has been recovering "very well" since last month's procedure.
"As with all of our transplant patients, Mr. Melnyk has been monitored closely by his transplant team and his general health has improved to the point where he can begin the next phase of his recovery," Humar said. "In addition, we are pleased to report that the anonymous donor has also been discharged and is doing extremely well."
Melnyk, 56, was admitted to the hospital in April because of liver-related complications. He underwent a liver transplant on May 19.
The club said Melnyk has been transferred to a facility that will provide him with daily rehabilitation services. He also will have weekly follow-up appointments with his transplant team.
