Gallo seeks encore as Rangers continue set with White Sox

Texas Rangers top prospect Joey Gallo shoots for an encore performance when the club takes on the Chicago White Sox in the second test of a three-game series in Arlington.

Gallo's contract from Double-A Frisco was purchased prior to Monday's 15-2 beat down of the White Sox and the left-handed slugger finished a triple shy of the cycle in his major league debut. He had a two-run single during a four- run first inning, clubbed a two-run homer in the third and added a double in the fifth inning for the Rangers, winners in four straight and 12 of 15 games.

"I didn't expect it to be that good of a night," said Gallo. "So it's pretty amazing and still hasn't really hit me yet. I'm just glad this is out of the way now."

Gallo is taking the place of injured third baseman Adrian Beltre (thumb) and will most likely head back to the minors upon Beltre's return. For now, Gallo is taking advantage of every opportunity to stay with the big league club.

Carlos Corporan clubbed a three-run homer and drove in five runs, while Shin- Soo Choo added a solo blast and two RBI for the Rangers. Starting pitcher Colby Lewis allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings for the win.

Nick Martinez hopes to get as much run support as Lewis did when he toes the rubber Wednesday night. Martinez has a 4-1 record and a 2.03 earned run average in 10 starts and suffered his first loss of the season in last Thursday's 5-1 loss to Boston, charged with two runs and nine hits in seven innings.

Martinez lost his only career start against the White Sox and gave up five runs and eight hits in five innings.

The White Sox had won four of six games until last night's loss and are 4-5 on an 11-game road trip. Adam Eaton hit a two-run homer and White Sox starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija was trounced to the tune of nine runs and 12 hits in five innings of work.

"He might not have had his best stuff tonight but we didn't help him out," said Eaton about Samardzija. "He's a great competitor and we always want him out there, but it was just one of those nights for him."

Hoping to avoid similar results on the hill Wednesday evening will be Chicago left-hander Chris Sale. Sale is 4-2 with a 3.66 earned run average in nine starts and delivered a fine performance in Thursday's 3-2 win at Baltimore, hurling 7 2/3 shutout innings of four-hit ball with a season-high 12 strikeouts and no walks.

Sale has fanned 22 batters over the last two starts and is 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA in nine career games (5 starts) against Texas.

Texas went 4-2 against Chicago last season and the two clubs will meet again for three games in the Windy City later this month.
