Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Chad Barrett scores in extra time as the Seattle Sounders FC defeat Red Bull New York 2-1 on Sunday night at CenturyLink Field.
New York enters the fixture having earned just one win from their last six games, while the Sounders have earned at least one point in each of their last three games.
Seattle had a great chance early on a set piece, Cristian Roldan header from the center of the box but Luis Robles came up with a huge save to keep game scoreless.
New York broke the tie in the 36th minute after a handball by Brad Evans just outside the box. The free kick was deflected up in the air in front of the goal and Lloyd Sam headed it past Seattle keeper Stefan Frei for the 1-0 lead. The lead held up at the break.
After a chippy start to the second half, Seattle would answer in the 69th minute. Obafemi Martins passed to Marco Pappa who made two moves around the defense and found the back of the net to tie the score 1-1.
Just as the referee held up the sign stating 3 minutes of extra time, Barrett chipped in a Clint Dempsey shot to give the Seattle Sounders a 2-1 win.
