Nice, France (SportsNetwork.com) - Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey were among Monday's first-round winners at the Nice Open, a final clay-court French Open tune-up.

The two-time NCAA singles champion Johnson handled qualifier Michael Venus of New Zealand 7-5, 6-3, while Querrey eased past Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans 6-2, 6-3 on the red clay at Nice Lawn Tennis Club.

Also on Day 2, rising Croat Borna Coric handled Aussie qualifier Sam Groth 7-5, 6-3 and Austrian Dominic Thiem downed Dominican Victor Estrella Burgos 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

In some second-round action on Tuesday, second-seeded American John Isner will open his week against his fellow countryman Johnson and eighth-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco will encounter Querrey.

Latvian Ernests Gulbis beat Argentine Federico Delbonis in last year's Nice finale.
