Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins fired manager Mike Redmond on Sunday afternoon after a 16-22 start to the season.
The move was announced by president of baseball operations Michael Hill just minutes after the Marlins were almost no-hit by Atlanta right-hander Shelby Miller.
Hill also announced that bench coach Rob Leary had been fired and said the team was seeking consistency.
The Marlins will announce a new manager on Monday morning.
"We haven't played to our capabilities and we're hopeful that a new voice will spark and motivate our guys to get them going," Hill said.
Redmond, a former catcher for the Marlins, was hired as manager in November 2012 and went 155-207 in two-plus seasons.
He finished fifth in voting for NL manager of the year last season and signed an extension that was to last through the 2017 season.
Instead, his final game was Sunday's 6-0 loss to Atlanta, which gave the Braves their second three-game sweep of the Marlins in Miami this season.
Miller came within one out of throwing the first Braves no-hitter in more than 21 years. The bid was broken up by Justin Bour's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Within minutes of the end of the game, Hill was in front of reporters telling them Redmond and Leary had been let go and that the team was seeking more from its bench leadership.
It was the Marlins' sixth loss in the last seven games, a stretch that has them just a half-game ahead of last-place Philadelphia in the NL East.
