Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Astros signed right-handed reliever Jose Veras to a minor league contract on Friday.
Veras, 34, made 34 appearances for the Astros in 2014, posting a 3.03 ERA and 37 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings. Prior to joining Houston, he owned a 8.10 ERA in 13 1/3 innings for the Cubs.
In his nine-year career that includes a previous stint with Houston, Veras has a 3.91 ERA and 438 strikeouts in 423 innings, all out of the bullpen, for the Yankees, Indians, Marlins, Pirates, Brewers, Astros, Brewers and Cubs.
In another move, the Astros traded minor league second baseman Ronald Torreyes to Toronto for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Prior to being designated for assignment on May 7, the 22-year-old was batting .200 for Triple-A Fresno.
