St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Carpenter hit a three-run home run and drove in four as the St. Louis Cardinals took a 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs in the second of a four-game set.
Kolten Wong was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored while Yadier Molina added two hits, an RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have ripped off eight straight victories.
"It's hard to describe it, but the way we've been able to win games, it's been a different guy every night," said Carpenter.
Tyler Lyons went just 4 1/3 innings in the start as he gave up four runs -- three earned -- on six hits while walking two and striking out seven. Mitch Harris (1-0) picked up the first win of his career for a scoreless inning of relief.
Starlin Castro drove in two while Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler each had an RBI for the Cubs, who have lost their last four.
Kyle Hendricks allowed four runs on six hits over five innings, while Edwin Jackson (1-1) was handed the loss for giving up two runs in the sixth.
"Hitting guys, walking guys, it's not what I do," said Hendricks. "Whatever it is, it's not there right now and I've got to do something to change things up."
The Cardinals got on the board in the second as Jhonny Peralta led off with a double and Molina singled him out two batters later for a 1-0 lead.
Chicago, though, answered in the third as Anthony Rizzo led off with a single and was able to move to third when Lyons' pickoff attempt at first went wild. Soler's sacrifice fly tied the game.
The Cubs took the lead in the fifth as Kris Bryant singled home a run, and Castro hit a grounder to shot with the bases loaded and one out. Castro was able to beat the throw to first for an inning-ending double play, and two runners came home for a 4-1 lead.
It was short-lived, though, as Carpenter belted a three-run home run to right, his fifth of the season, to tie the game in the home fifth.
The Cardinals then went on top in the sixth. Molina singled with one out and Wong followed with a base hit. Mark Reynolds then doubled in one run and Carpenter brought home another with a sac fly for a 6-4 lead.
Wong's RBI single in the seventh extended the lead to 7-4.
