Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The Oakland Athletics made a pair of roster moves prior to Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers, designating veteran outfielder Cody Ross for assignment and placing reliever Eric O'Flaherty on the 15-day disabled list.
Ross went just 3-for-22 at the plate with three RBI in nine games this season. The 34-year-old signed with Oakland as a free agent on April 8, four days after being released by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
O'Flaherty, who missed much of the 2014 season recovering from Tommy John surgery, is dealing with a left shoulder strain and last pitched on Thursday. The left-hander has struggled in the early going, having permitted 10 runs -- nine earned -- and 11 hits with five walks over seven innings.
Outfielder Billy Burns was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Ross' place, with pitcher R.J. Alvarez also summoned from the Sounds.
Alvarez appeared in six games with Oakland before being optioned to Memphis on April 22. The 23-year-old righty struck out 12 in six innings, but was tagged for nine runs -- eight earned -- and a pair of homers.
Burns went 1-for-6 with three stolen bases in 13 games with the A's last season. The speedster was hitting .315 with five steals in 21 games with Nashville thus far in 2015.
