Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Kansas City Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar, hit in the face by a pitch on Wednesday, was placed on the 7-day concussion disabled list prior to Friday's game against the Detroit Tigers.

Escobar was forced to exit Wednesday's game at Cleveland after being struck in the cheek by a fastball from the Indians' Danny Salazar during the fifth inning. He did not play in the Royals' series opener with the Tigers on Thursday.

The Royals' leadoff hitter batted .291 with eight RBI and 10 runs scored in 19 games in April.

Christian Colon filled in at shortstop on Thursday and is expected to take over the position until Escobar returns. Kansas City also recalled infielder Orlando Calixte from Triple-A Omaha for Friday's contest.

Colon is hitting .267 with three RBI in 10 games this season.
