Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - The Montreal Impact's Cinderella run in the CONCACAF Champions League came to an end on Wednesday night as Mexican side Club America took a 4-2 second leg and 5-3 aggregate victory at Olympic Stadium to win their sixth continental title.
Despite not having won a game yet in Major League Soccer play, the Impact continued to win over hearts and minds during their tournament run, taking out established teams such as Costa Rican side Alajuelense and Liga MX outfit Pachuca.
Frank Klopas' team gutted out a 1-1 draw against the Mexican giants in Mexico City in the first leg, and were 90 good minutes away from capping an improbable run in style.
Montreal went in front after eight minutes through a goal from Andres Romero and took that lead into the halftime break.
But America roared to life in the second half as Dario Benedetto scored a hat trick and Mexican national team forward Oribe Peralta added a fourth goal to send America to a 4-1 lead.
Benedetto made it 1-1 just five minutes into the second half and Peralta gave his side the lead with 26 minutes to play before America seized full control as Benedetto struck in the 66th and 81st minutes to complete his treble.
Jack McInerney added a consolation goal in the 89th minute, but America held on through the remaining time to claim the title.
Montreal will return to MLS action on May 9 against the Portland Timbers at Stade Saputo.
