Marrakech, Morocco (SportsNetwork.com) - Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia and Spain's Lara Arruabarrena were first-round winners Monday in the Moroccan Grand Prix.

The seventh-seeded Schmiedlova advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa and Arruabarrena topped Japan's Kurumi Nara, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, in the only two main draw matches on Monday.

The top seed this week is Spain's Garbine Muguruza, while Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky is the second seed.

Francesca Schiavone, the 2013 winner, was forced to withdraw before the start of the tournament because of an illness.
