Kings close out season with win over rival Sharks

Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jonathan Quick made 20 saves in a solid performance between the pipes and the Los Angeles Kings closed out the season with a 4-1 victory over the rival San Jose Sharks on Saturday.

Tyler Toffoli and Andy Andreoff each tallied a goal and an assist, while Marian Gaborik and Brayden McNabb also lit the lamp for the Kings (40-27-15), who were eliminated from playoff contention with Thursday's 3-1 loss to Calgary.

"I think our team was incomplete this year," Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said. "You look at it and our record ends up, being this year, identical to the first cup year ... That record is not good enough to be a playoff team, it's not good enough to win a championship."

Brent Burns supplied San Jose's (40-33-9) lone goal and Alex Stalock made 32 saves in defeat.

"We expected to be better than we were this year. It's disappointing," Sharks head coach Todd McLellan said. "I'm disappointed that we're not going to play from this point on. Our results put us in that situation."

McNabb gave the Kings a 2-1 lead 6:03 into the final stanza when his slap shot from the right circle deflected off a defender's stick, ricocheted off the far post and crossed the goal line just after a power play expired.

Nearly 3 1/2 minutes later, Gaborik gave the Kings some breathing room by taking a Jake Muzzin feed, moving into the slot and wristing a shot past Stalock.

Stalock was pulled in favor of an extra attacker with under a minute to play, but Andreoff scored into the vacated cage to account for the final score.

The Sharks wasted no time getting on the board, as Burns one-timed Joe Pavelski's cross-crease feed from the side of the net for a power-play goal 1:38 into the game.

Toffoli tied the game midway through the second by backhanding home a rebound past Stalock from atop the goalmouth.

Game Notes

The Kings reached the 40-win mark for the fifth time in the past six seasons ... Los Angeles is the first defending Stanley Cup winners to miss the playoffs since the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006-07 ... The Kings tied a franchise record set in 1990-91 for most points at home with 57 ... Andreoff recorded his first career assist on Toffoli's marker.
