Parma, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - Silvestre Varela produced the lone goal at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on Wednesday to lift lowly Parma to a 1-0 defeat of Udinese.

It has been a disappointing season for Parma, which has faced sanctions for failing to pay its players.

Varela, though, provided the club and its supporters with a rare bright spot, scoring in the 70th minute to hand Parma just its fourth win of the campaign.

The win sees Parma improve to 13 points, but with the club sitting 13 points adrift of safety with only 10 matches to play, relegation is a near certainty for the fabled Serie A side.
