Antoine Griezmann, however, made sure of the win just seven minutes later by bagging his team-leading 16 La Liga goal of the campaign.
Atletico rode the double for the remaining 80 minutes to collect all three points, lifting Diego Simeone's men to 65 points on the season.
Also on Tuesday, Mikel Arruabarrena bagged the lone goal in Eibar's 1-0 defeat of Malaga while goals from Kevin Gameiro and Jose Antonio Reyes handed Sevilla a 2-1 win at Levante.
