(SportsNetwork.com) - Texas coach Rick Barnes has been fired after 17 seasons as coach of the Longhorns, according to multiple reports Saturday.

Barnes, who became the winningest coach in program history eight years ago, led Texas into the NCAA Tournament 16 times, making it as far as the Final Four in 2003.

He finished his 17th season with a 402-180 record as the Longhorns coach and owns a career mark of 604-314 with previous stops at George Mason, Providence and Clemson.

His removal would open a coveted coaching position in one of the nation's top athletic departments and many outlets, including ESPN and CBSSports.com, have reported Wichita State's Gregg Marshall and VCU's Shaka Smart as possible replacements for Barnes.

Texas fell to Iowa State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament this season and lost its NCAA Tournament opener against Butler as an 11 seed.
