New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - New York City FC striker David Villa made history on Tuesday by becoming the club's first player to take home MLS Player of the Week honors.
Villa produced a fine performance to lead NYC to a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution in the club's home opener at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.
The former Spain international opened the scoring in the 19th minute, working a neat give-and-go with Ned Grabavoy before finishing a shot past Bobby Shuttleworth.
Villa had a hand in the second goal, as well, beating his man on the left flank and curling a superb low cross to the back post for Patrick Mullins to double the advantage six minutes from time.
It was New York City's first win of the campaign, and the expansion club will attempt to keep rolling on Saturday when it heads to Dick's Sporting Goods Park to take on the Colorado Rapids.
