Wolfsburg, Germany (SportsNetwork.com) - Wolfsburg stayed within 11 points of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Sunday as the club secured a 3-0 home triumph over second-from-the-bottom Freiburg.
The visitors put up a spirited fight in defeat despite falling behind in the 19th minute to a goal from Kevin De Bruyne.
Wolfsburg remained just one goal up until the final 12 minutes when a penalty kick from Ricardo Rodriguez doubled the lead, while Maximilian Arnold added a late goal to cap the scoring for the home side.
De Bruyne handed Wolfsburg a good start by scoring inside the first 20 minutes as he found space at the top of the penalty area and lashed a shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
Bas Dost missed a pair of chances to extend Wolfsburg's lead, but Freiburg threatened as well and Wolfsburg goalkeeper Diego Benaglio was called upon to make quality saves on Christian Gunter and Marc Torrejon.
But Wolfsburg got a bit of breathing room 12 minutes from time as Roman Burki was called for bringing down De Bruyne inside the box, which allowed Rodriguez to score from the spot.
De Bruyne capped a strong outing by setting up Arnold with a close-range finish at the far post with the result keeping Freiburg three points from safety.
In Sunday's other fixture, Monchengladbach regained third place in the league table with a 2-0 win over Hannover as Patrick Herrmann scored a goal in each half.
