Queens, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - St. John's shot blocker Chris Obekpa was suspended for two weeks for violating team rules, Red Storm coach Steve Lavin announced Sunday.
Lavin did not say what rule or rules Obekpa broke.
"All of the young men associated with our program are held to standards consistent with the aims and mission of our university," Lavin said in a statement. "Accountability is tied to the decision making of our student- athletes. It is our hope Chris will learn from this experience."
The 6-foot-10 Obekpa is among the nation's best shot blockers, averaging 3.1 in 30 games this season, including 24 starts. The junior from Nigeria also averages 5.8 points and 7.0 rebounds.
The suspension would include the first two weeks of the NCAA Tournament. He is not eligible to play again until March 29.
The Red Storm (21-11) were knocked out of the Big East Tournament on Thursday in a loss to Providence in the quarterfinals. Obekpa had nine rebounds, four points and one block in the 74-57 loss.
