(SportsNetwork.com) - Reggie Bush is heading back home to California, as the former USC star running back has agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Bush, released by the Detroit Lions last month, announced his intentions via Twitter on Saturday.

"The best is yet to come #49ers", Bush tweeted.

Bush delivered his second career 1,000-yard rushing season with the Lions in 2013, but saw his production drop during an injury-plagued 2014 season. Limited to just 11 games, the 30-year-old managed just 297 yards and two touchdowns on 76 carries, though he did record 40 receptions totaling 253 yards.

The nine-year veteran will likely serve as the 49ers' primary back on passing downs while splitting ball-carrying duties with promising second-year pro Carlos Hyde.

Frank Gore, San Francisco's leading rusher in each of the last 10 seasons, signed with Indianapolis on Tuesday's first day of free agency.

Since being selected by New Orleans with the second overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft, Bush has racked up 466 receptions for 3,489 yards over 116 career games. As a runner, he's accumulated an additional 5.465 yards and 35 touchdowns.

Following a five-year tenure with the Saints, Bush spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, where he ran for a career-best 1,086 yards in 2011, before joining Detroit in 2013.
