Uniondale, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - The New York Islanders signed defenseman Johnny Boychuk to a seven-year contract extension on Thursday.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but Newsday reported the deal to be worth $42 million with an average annual cap hit of $6 million, keeping Boychuk with the franchise through the 2021-22 season.
Boychuk, 31, has posted career highs in goals (seven), assists (25) and points (32) in 59 games this season, his first with the Islanders.
"Johnny's influence in our dressing room, both on and off the ice, has been immeasurable," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said. "His veteran presence is an asset that we are thrilled to help lead our club."
Boychuk, a member of the 2010-11 Bruins Stanley Cup championship team, was acquired from Boston for a 2015 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2016 third-round pick prior to the start of the season.
The Edmonton native has posted 26 goals and 81 assists over 380 games with the Avalanche, Bruins and Islanders.
